H.G.L. (Eric) Peels was born in 1956 in Dordrecht. From 1974 to 1981 he studied theology at the Theological University of Apeldoorn and Akkadian at the Free University of Amsterdam. In 1982 he passed his doctoral-II exam at the TUA, subsequently he was pastor of the Christian Reformed church of  Zoetermeer from 1982-1986. From 1987-1992 he was senior lecturer in Old Testament  studies at the TUA, where he obtained his doctorate in 1992 with a dissertation on the vengeance of God in the Old Testament. In the same year he was appointed professor of  Old Testament by the General Synod of the Christian Reformed Churches. He has held this chair since 1993 through January 2023.
