Short cv

Maarten Jacob Kater was born on 18 December 1962 in Klaaswaal. After his high school exam he obtained teaching certificates in mathematics MO-A and MO-B and from 1982 - 1990 he taught at the Christelijke scholengemeenschap Prins Maurits in Middelharnis. From 1990 - 1994 he studied theology at the Theological University of the Christian Reformed Churches in Apeldoorn (TUA). After having passed the candidate exam in February 1994, he was made appealable by the curatorium and answered the calling from the congregation of Zeist. As a servant of the Word he remained attached to this congregation until 4 September 2009. In October 1998 he passed the doctoral exam (old style), with dogmatics as his main subject. The theme of his doctoral thesis was Jonathan Edwards' view of faith in theology. The General Synod of 2007 appointed him part-time lecturer in dogmatics and apologetics at the TUA, where he obtained his doctorate on 29 March 2011 with the thesis Kom en zie (Come and see, part II). In it he argues that  the pre-existence of the Son is illuminated by the existence of Jesus, the Christ. As of 1 December 2013 he has been appointed by the General Synod Urk/Nunspeet as the successor of Prof. Dr. A. Baars as ecclesiastical senior lecturer (Reformed) in practical theology and affiliated full-time with the TUA. On 1 November 2016 he was appointed professor of practical theology by the General Synod.
The writer is married to Jacoba Lijntje Hartman and they have five children and three grandchildren.
